You might want to get a thumb drive or external hard drive to store those larger files and have more space for your game files. Do you have a lot of photos, music and videos stored on your laptop? For most if not all mods, using the replace function may not completely update all the code properly. If the date modified isn't changing when you add the updated versions, then I wonder if maybe you are dragging the files in and clicking "replace".
